Life of a Leaf

To begin small, almost imaginary, my life begins at one of the trees many hands.

I grow from a bud, soaking in the elements,I become a strand of a paint brush, coloring the wind different colors.

All the while I wave to others across the way, who are doing the same thing,

Together, we grow, and shape the world we exist in.

Stretching tall as the sun peeks out of the clouds, warming me and granting my expansion.

I hold tightly with my feet, pressed together, while my chest dances freely in the presence of the Earth’s exhales.

Munch, munch, munch. I feel a passing caterpillar take a few nibbles,

I help replenish it’s energy to aid in it’s blooming wings.

I am not attached to my appearance, knowing i will take on many shapes and colors.

I know that standing alone I am small, but collectively with my brothers and sisters, we form the canopy of the forest.

With colder air arriving, I look down at the ground below, knowing soon that we will one day meet.

When the time comes, I bravely wait for Earth’s breath.

I let go of the branch that’s been home, I begin my descent.

A strong gust sends me on a thrilling ride through Earth’s breath, allowing me to feel true freedom as I soar with my newly acquired orange sweater.

I gently splash in a nearby stream, seeing those who let go before me on a branch.

I am not done.

I sail downstream, allowing the current to show me a new perspective of the forest.

I slip past stones, bidding adieu to those who chose this as their resting place.

That is, until I see a log that I decide to attach to.

Here is where I will live out the rest of my days, in this form.

I salute my friends who continue on their journey downstream, and welcome those who just are arriving.

This is where I pause and begin to give back to Earth.

For, what was needed for me to live this life,I will provide.

I will help build a foundation to the next life of a leaf.
